WHAT CAN YOU DO…TODAY?
It's simple But you must be very brave:
1. Speak to strangers as you would a friend. Look them in the eye. Smile. Assume
that they will be friendly back to you they probably will!
2. Speak to strangers you have been intimidated to talk to before: the teenager
with dreadlocks at the supermarket, the woman in traditional Sikh clothing with turban at the mall, the old gentleman with a cane behind you at the bank, and especially to the child in the wheelchair with
medical equipment encumbrances.
NOTE: Use the same good judgement you would tell your small child to use, follow
your heart and your gut before you choose someone to strike up a conversation with.
3. Rejoice in our differences! Ask questions. Don't judge or ridicule. Find
likeness. Accept and embrace differences.
4. Don't ever tolerate bigoted conversations in your presence stop the
offender and attempt to correct the behavior. At least you won't have participated in allowing it to continue without causing the individual to stop and think. Next time they may think twice before speaking.
5. Don't get discouraged if you don't receive the response you expected try again
right away with someone else!
6. Teach your children these things.
7. Practice, all day, every day.
